Apaches plan to attack a fort by wearing uniforms plundered from a cavalry officer's (Peter Graves) supply column.

Sheridan City is out of control. The citizens are corrupt, the saloon is an immoral indulgence, and gunmen and greedy opportunists come and go as they please. With the town's lawman (Henry Hull) incapable of maintaining order, the town council brings in a hired gun, Clint Tollinger (Robert Mitchum), who has business of his own with the saloon madame (Jan Sterling). Tollinger sets about proving his reputation as a "town tamer" through his signature approach: eradicating violence with violence.

Cavalry veteran Sgt. Wade McCoy (Chuck Connors) immediately butts heads with his new supervisor, Lt. Jonathan Davenport (George Neise), over the latter's lack of experience on the treacherous route known as the "Tomahawk Trail," but Davenport's unfamiliarity with the territory proves deadly when a trip to Fort Bowie finds the troop under Apache attack. Crazy from the heat, Davenport turns on his men, forcing McCoy to go against his commanding officer in order to save the lives of others.

During the 1912 Mexican Revolution, rebel leader Hector Cordoba (Raf Vallone) and his bloodthirsty revolutionaries slip across the Texas border and liberate a number of cannons from a U.S. Army fort. Under direct orders from General Pershing (John Russell), Captain Rod Douglas (George Peppard) heads into Mexican territory to face down Cordoba and get back the American cannons with the help of Mexican military officer Antonio (Gabriele Tinti) and alluring local Leonora (Giovanna Ralli).

The year is 1908, and aging adventurer Sam Longwood (Lee Marvin) and his gang of crooked cowboys have been cheated out of a big score by their own cohort, Jack Colby (Robert Culp). After years of searching, Sam finally tracks Colby down and decides to take revenge against his former accomplice. Sam regroups his old circle of grifters, and they hatch a scheme to get their hands on Colby's fortune; however, nothing seems to go smoothly for these ramshackle scam artists.

Illiterate fur trapper Joe Bass (Burt Lancaster) is coerced by some Kiowa Indians into trading his haul for a well-educated, escaped slave named Joseph Lee (Ossie Davis). Bass seeks to track the Indians and recover his treasure, while Joseph wants to travel to Mexico, where slavery is illegal. Their plans are complicated by the arrival of a band of scalphunters, led by Jim Howie (Telly Savalas), who want to kill the Indians, claim the furs and resell the black man.

Upstanding widower "Big Eli" Wakefield (Burt Lancaster) decides to move from Kentucky further west to Texas. He undertakes the journey with just his young son "Little Eli" (Donald MacDonald), but en route they pick up friends like indentured servant Hannah (Dianne Foster) and schoolmarm Susie (Diana Lynn), a potential love interest. This motley crew's path is difficult, and they face many obstacles, not the least of which is nasty frontiersman Stan Bodine (Walter Matthau).

An outlaw attempting to go straight while tracking down one of his wife's killers, Jim "Tex" Wall (George Montgomery) finds work on a ranch operated by disabled cattle owner "Bull" Herrick (Bruce Bennett). As Tex begins to fall for Bull's pretty sister, Helen (Sylvia Findley), he also has to face off against two feuding gangs of rustlers, one led by the tough Heesman (Peter Graves). Can Tex escape his shady past and finally end his mission of vengeance?
