When they arrive at college, socially inept freshmen Larry (Thomas Hulce) and Kent (Stephen Furst) attempt to pledge the snooty Omega Theta Pi House, but are summarily rejected. Lowering their standards, they try at the notoriously rowdy Delta Tau Chi House, and get in. The trouble is, the college dean (John Vernon) has it in for the Deltas. He has put them on "Double Secret Probation" and secretly assigned Omega's president (James Daughton) the task of having their charter revoked.

After his release from prison, Jake (John Belushi) reunites with his brother, Elwood (Dan Aykroyd) - collectively known as the "Blues Brothers." Jake's first task is to save the orphanage the brothers grew up in from closing, by raising $5,000 to pay back taxes. The two are convinced they can earn the money by getting their old band back together. However, after playing several gigs and making a few enemies, including the police, the brothers face daunting odds to deliver the money on time.

In this satirical take on Westerns, crafty railroad worker Bart (Cleavon Little) becomes the first black sheriff of Rock Ridge, a frontier town about to be destroyed in order to make way for a new railroad. Initially, the people of Rock Ridge harbor a racial bias toward their new leader. However, they warm to him after realizing that Bart and his perpetually drunk gunfighter friend (Gene Wilder) are the only defense against a wave of thugs sent to rid the town of its population.

Feeling that his squad is not up to snuff, a police commander comes up with an unorthodox plan to hire everyday citizens to work alongside police officers. Unruly Sgt. Carey Mahoney (Steve Guttenberg) is given the job of training the citizens. At first Mahoney does not take the job seriously, but, when he learns that his nemesis, Capt. Harris (G.W. Bailey), is gunning for his commander's job, Mahoney focuses on making the plan work - and bringing down Harris at the same time.

When the governor announces the state can't afford to keep both of its police academies open, Commandant Lassard (George Gaynes) and Commandant Mauser (Art Metrano) are pitted against one another. Lassard asks some of his old cadets, including Sgt. Mahoney (Steve Guttenberg), to train the new recruits, who include high-strung Sweetchuck (Tim Kazurinsky) and loudmouthed Zed (Bobcat Goldthwait). As evaluation day approaches, each side tries to sabotage the other.

After graduating in the first "Police Academy," Carey Mahoney (Steve Guttenberg) and the rest of his hapless fellow officers are assigned to a precinct commanded by Capt. Pete Lassard (Howard Hesseman), whose district is being harassed by a gang led by Zed (Bob Goldthwait). Given 30 days to shape up or lose his post, Lassard struggles to discipline his incompetent new charges, while subordinate Lt. Mauser (Art Metrano) plots to take his job away.
