Upstanding widower "Big Eli" Wakefield (Burt Lancaster) decides to move from Kentucky further west to Texas. He undertakes the journey with just his young son "Little Eli" (Donald MacDonald), but en route they pick up friends like indentured servant Hannah (Dianne Foster) and schoolmarm Susie (Diana Lynn), a potential love interest. This motley crew's path is difficult, and they face many obstacles, not the least of which is nasty frontiersman Stan Bodine (Walter Matthau).

However, Billings and his men are unaware that a group of renegades, wary of the suspicious U.S. treaty, seek to kill the messengers before they can complete their mission.

Jake Remy (Warren Oates) and his band of mercenaries shoot their way through a tiny border town, planning to escape with their plunder across the river into Mexico. They dispatch a few men to neutralize the local ferryman, Travis (Lee Van Cleef), but he and flinty mountain man Phil (Forrest Tucker) foil the scheme. By the time Jake reaches the river, Travis has already taken everyone from the town to the Mexican side. He refuses passage to the mercenaries, and a lengthy standoff ensues.

Sheriff Wade Addams (Hugh O'Brian) is engaged to Linda Gibson (Nancy Gates) and searching for an elusive killer, Tris Hatten (Raymond Burr). Linda's little brother, Clay (Donald MacDonald), happens upon Tris' hideout one day, and immediately notifies Wade, who arrests the killer. Despite efforts to keep Clay's involvement a secret, the details come out and Clay's life is threatened. Wade must protect Clay while sidestepping attempts on his own life by Tris' henchmen.

A group of Apaches visits a cavalry fort in hopes of laying down their weapons and coming to a peace agreement, but Maj. Wharton (J. Ian Douglas), wanting to make a name for himself, orders his men to massacre them. Meanwhile, Col. Garrett (Kent Taylor) believes his flirtatious wife is sleeping with Capt. Thompson (Ben Johnson), so he tries to get rid of the captain by ordering him to track Victorio (Larry Chance), a notorious Apache warrior who's plotting a large-scale attack on the fort.

When Swedish-American whaler George Hanson (Sterling Hayden) returns to his Texas hometown after 20 years at sea, he's shocked to learn that his father was murdered just two days prior. The feckless local sheriff (Tyler McVey) won't do anything about it, so George investigates on his own and discovers that an oil speculator (Sebastian Cabot) had his father killed for refusing to sell his land at an unfair price. Enraged, and armed only with a speargun, George goes looking for justice.

During the 1840s, a wagon train is headed west with Davy Crockett (George Montgomery), a young man who shares a name with his famous frontiersman uncle, acting as one of the train's Native American scouts. After the passengers narrowly survive a series of ambushes from Native Americans, they come to believe that a spy is on board, helping plot the attacks. Suspicions fall on Davy's innocent partner, Red Hawk (Philip Reed), so he and Davy set out to find the real culprit.

A marshal (George Montgomery) courts a rancher's sister (Dorothy Malone) and rids a town of rustlers.

When Bat transports a large herd of horses to Fort Bowie, a gang stages an ambush, killing many of Bat's men and stealing the herd; Bat must use his wits to recover the horses and bring the killers to justice.

A gambler establishes a casino in Bat's name and cheats his cowboy customers out of their money.
