When he's fired from his job at the railroad, Carl Buckley (Broderick Crawford) asks his wife, Vicki (Gloria Grahame), to pay a visit to his boss, Owens (Grandon Rhodes), to try to earn his sympathies. It works, but Carl then assumes that Vicki and Owens are involved romantically, so he murders his boss in a jealous rage. Sick of her husband's violent ways, Vicki seduces Jeff (Glenn Ford), another worker at the railroad, hoping that she can convince him to murder her husband.

Georgina (Lynn Redgrave) is a carefree and childlike 22-year-old who finds more joy in her relationships with children than with the adults in her life. Her parents' employer, James Leamington (James Mason), proposes marriage, but Georgy avoids giving him an answer, as the idea of romance confuses her. It turns out the theater is now an Army Recruitment Center. But these former peddlers are not the only fish out of water. Wealthy Randolph Parker III (Lee Bowman) joins as well, though he seems more focused on hostess Judy Gray (Jane Frazee) than on his responsibilities.

Lt. Quinton McHale (Ernest Borgnine) and his navy crew concoct a plot to make some money from horse racing results, but the plan flops and they ring up a $2,000 debt to a troop of Marines. When they try to recoup their losses, their ship runs into a building, which only compounds their debt. Soon McHale and the klutzy Parker (Tim Conway) devise a new idea: They will steal a racehorse and enter it in a race in disguise, hoping to win the prize money.
